The Facts about B.tox Procedures

September 30, 2009

Botox has become the latest thing in Sydney society and these days it has become an important part of a beauty routine for individuals in the city. However I never cease to be amazed when I hear the rumours about the procedure.

Here I have outlines some of the mistakes which I hear all the time in Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I am employed as a physician.

Fallacy # 1: I might not be able to use my facial muscles normally!

Research indicates there are about sixty muscles in the human face. The facial muscles ordinarily operate harmoniously, but from excessive movement lines can start to appear. Too large a dose of Botulinum Toxin can result in the forehead looking over relaxed. In general physicians use relatively minute quantities to make you appear less tired, but still you will keep your facial expression.

Therefore by using small quantities of the toxin in precisely the right areas an expressive face is preserved whilst the lines undergo a softening effect.

Fallacy # 2: Botulinum is a toxin!
There is a little truth in this assertion. Its pharmaceutical name is Botulinum Toxin Type A. Too large a quantity can loosen facial muscles that you do not want loosened or may make one very sick.

Pharmacists have a well known phrase that states ‘everything is poisonous - it all depends on the dose’. A large dose of any medicine may result in sickness. Water can be fatal if you take enough.

Fallacy # 3: Botox hurts!
At Star Cosmetic Medicine the physician will use a needle finer than human hair. Some individuals liken the injections to a bug bite. It is certainly not as painful as a procedure like a vaccination.

Fallacy # 4: Botox will deaden the sensation in my face!
Not true. Botox targets the neuromuscular junction, not sensate nerves. Just the ability to relax muscles is impacted by Botox injections.

Fallacy # 5. Once you begin Botox you must continue or else you will age faster than before!
Once Again this is just untrue.

The first Botox treatment will last around 3 months. Any further treatments after the initial consultation commonly last a little longer. The wrinkles will eventually reform as the muscle returns to normal. But they will definitely not be any more noticeable than before.

Even if you never had Botox ever again - those lines will in all likelihood be a little smoother than if you had not been treated. In the main due to the fact that you have given your skin a ‘wrinkle holiday’ during the treatment.
