Is Something Fishy with Your Screen Name?

July 28, 2009

poker is about perception. Nowhere is this truer than in online gaming, where a player needs to choose a screen name that accurately projects how they feel about the game. Far too many players fall into the trap of picking a screen name that is obviously not accurate. This is strikingly apparent in the huge number of poker screen names that incorporate fish into the name.

In case you need a quick refresher in online poker lingo, a fish is an unschooled beginner player who makes beginner mistakes. No one would want to willingly be called a fish because it denotes a lack of ability. Think long and hard about screen names like Goldfish27 or PokerFish101 at your table. They are probably not fish at all. I can assure you that anyone that goes into an online poker room attempting to project an image of inexperience if very skilled in the ore subtle arts of poker. They are trying to get the upper hand at the table by urging you to go easy on them.

In is a very low deception, and I strongly urging you to avoid linking any fish names to your screen name. The deception won’t work, and you will just look like a fool. Anyone knowledgeable enough to know the poker slang is obviously not a fish. Fishy screen names will not help you out. Only good poker skills will make you win.
