It All Began at Queen Wilhelmina Park

July 14, 2009

I didn’t realize how famished I was till I saw the breakfast buffet. It looked so magnificent and immediately a mountain of food was piled up on my plate. I looked around the restaurant to find a perfect place to enjoy my breakfast and soon narrowed down a cozy table at the far end of the restaurant.

Half way through, someone from the restaurant came to me and handed me a note. I looked at him for some kind of explanation but none came and he promptly walked away. I opened the note which said, “Meet me at the statue at Queen Wilhelmina Park at 11. Joe.”

I kept thinking back to who Joe was and couldn’t seem to remember but the name seemed awfully familiar. That is when I remembered who it was. Before breakfast, I had bumped into the guy who was staying in the suite next to mine. He was well dressed, polite, and seemed to be quite harmless. We had a general conversation and it didn’t seem like he was interested in me at all. On the contrary, I assumed he was interested in the another tall woman on our floor.

Oh god! What a womanizer I thought to myself. But I must admit I was slightly intrigued. He was quite charming with his blond hair and freckled nose. The possibility that he would turn out to be a sex maniac or an axe murderer was quite limited. Then again, it was not entirely impossible. I didn’t know who he was exactly. He could have lied about himself to get his way with me.

As all these thoughts bounced around in my head, my breakfast was officially ruined. And that was a good reason to blame him for and not go. But then again the breakfast would be good tomorrow as well. Maybe he did deserve a second chance. There was no harm really. The Queen Wilhelmina Park in Oranjestad was a popular tourist place with plenty of people around, so there was very little he could do to harm me.

As I walked towards Queen Wilhelmina Park I reconsidered my decision several times. Before I knew it I was at the statue. He recognized me instantly but seemed a little puzzled. I immediately asked him what the note was about. When he saw the note in my hand he seemed quite embarrassed. As he told me that the note was meant for the other woman on our floor I could feel myself turning red with embarrassment. The hotel staff had apparently made a mistake.

I tried to hastily retreat from Queen Wilhelmina Park when Joe stopped me and started apologizing. I wasn’t in a mood to talk but he insisted on making it up to me by taking me out for lunch. Well, that day we had a great lunch followed by many other great lunches. Today, we are happily married.
