How Viruses and Spyware Get In to Your Computer

December 30, 2008

Spyware and viruses infect an individual or business computer in many ways, from the obvious methods to the sneaky, back door tricks. Viruses are designed to interrupt and alter normal computer functioning and spyware is intended to literally spy on its victims, all the while recording their personal information. Either infection, no matter what the method in which it intruded by, can cause an array of difficulties for the computer user.

Often times viruses and spyware are put into your computer by opening insecure emails and sharing files with infected computers. Spyware also intrudes as a “ride along” on third party software you might purchase and download online. In other situations spyware and viruses find a “back door” in your computer and use it to install their malicious codes.
Signs your computer has been affected by viruses or spyware could be unusual behavior and slower functioning.

Unauthorized dial out from your internet connection are most likely spyware applications. Other common signs include browser crashes, longer boot ups, more pop ups and possibly missing files.

To get rid of any virus or spyware infection back up your files and scan them for viruses and/or spyware. Keep your virus and spyware software updated and run the scans regularly. If you have no spyware or virus scanning software it is recommended you find a free programs that will detect and warn you of possible infections.

Once you have the proper software it is important to get rid of spyware infections and viruses as well as protect your privacy and your computer from further invasions. If spyware has latched onto your computer and at scanning tool catches it you will most likely have to remove the entire programs to completely rid yourself of those spyware applications.

Promoting Brain Density with Technology

Many people had wondered what made Albert Einstein so smart? How was he able to do all the things he did, when others never could? They wondered if his brain was different, many were sure of it. Upon his death his brain was dissected and it was a normal human brain in ever regard, except it was a little denser. Apparently the density of the brain does assist in allowing it to work more efficiently.

I propose that we therefore figure out a way to help brains become denser, buy the use of growth drugs and special use of waves sent into the brain via a device. Come again, what are you saying here, how can we do that? Well, by promoting Brain Density and growth with Ultra Sound Therapy and Ionic Enhancement. It may be best to encourage this growth during the childhood development and we will need to do a lot more research before we figure out what is and is not possible. But in the end the concept should work and prove to be a very positive thing for the whole of humanity.

For instance those who are recruited as International Terrorist Suicide Bombers are generally of lower intelligence. People of lower intelligence are more likely to cause hostile actions in the world. With the future of technology humans will need to be smarter to be able to sustain employment. Consider this in 2006.

Debt Management Links

Debt management links

With January 2009 nearly upon us I started thinking about the likelihood of people needing help with personal finance issues. I’m thinking debt management here in particular . . . I imagine that many consumers will have over spent in the Christmas period and that a few will wake up with a bit of a financial hangover.

I put together a quick list of useful debt management resources where my readers will be able to find lots of useful information on personal debt and debt management issues. Please note that I’m not endorsing any of the resources . . . they’re just a list of useful websites I found when researching debt management.

The sites are a mix of commercial, not-for profit and informational resources offering a wide range of help and advice with debt management, including debt management plans, free debt management plans and general personal finance advice.

As ever, I’d suggest you use your own judgement when using this debt management resource list:

PS: from what I understand, debt management is the process of negotiating reduced monthly payments on your debts with your creditors. It appears that there are two or three routes you can take depending on your needs - professional services (fee payable), voluntary services & do it yourself:

The Importance Of Laws On Public Transportation

December 29, 2008

Aside from private car accidents there are also a great number of related public transportation accidents. The Federal Government is the one regulating the common carriers that transport passengers and cargo across the entire state. Nevertheless, each separate state has its own regulated public transportation system all within its state’s lines. But in general it’s the Federal Government that controls the interstate transportation while the individual states are to manage the intrastate transportation.

Just what are common carriers? Common carrier is the term given to refer to one who make known to the public that his business involves the transporting of persons or cargo from one point to another within or outside the state in return for compensation and also the services rendered are available to the public. Some of the common carriers available are buses, trains, ferries and airplanes. Nevertheless, there are some exceptions especially when it comes to certain types of airplanes as well as some vessels that are included in the private charter transportation.

The importance of knowing whether a transportation service is a common carrier or not is for the implementation of specific common carrier regulations in various states. The common carrier regulations are usually applied to equipment requirements, licensing, transportation procedures, fare and rates and others that are related to the operation of the common carrier. The set regulations are provided to benefit not only the common carrier industry but more so the general public. Common carriers are required to follow strictly the regulations and standards impose in their respective states.

For accidents relating to common carriers, the Federal Government has created various regulations as to the degree of the liability that common carriers have to its passengers who are injured while making use of the common carrier services. In case of common carrier accidents individual State law applies in determining the extent of personal injuries which a common carrier may be liable. However, a great number of states follow the general rule that common carriers are liable for personal injuries sustained by its passengers. This law is based on the premise that a common carrier must and should employ the highest level of care, diligence as well as vigilance when transporting passengers to their appointed destinations. The common carrier is also expected to maintain necessary equipment coupled with a reasonable degree of skill in order to accomplish the safe transportation of passengers.

And depending on the governing state law, there are some state regulations that do not necessarily obligate a common carrier to be completely responsible for the safety of its passengers but requires that the common carrier should show a high degree of care to its passengers. But still the general rule applies that a common carrier would be held responsible for injuries sustained by its passengers in cases wherein accident would have been avoided if only the carrier had used care and diligence in transporting their passengers.

Do You Have a Case Against Your Stock Broker? Ten ways to Te

December 28, 2008

As an attorney who represents individual investors from around the Country in claims against their stock brokers, I hear a wide variety of complaints about brokers’ fraud and misconduct. If you believe that your broker has abused or harmed you, you may want to consider whether your complaint falls within any of the following typical complaint categories. If you fall into one of these categories, you may have a meritorious complaint against your broker.

Here are some guidelines to consider whether or not you have a case:

1- Unsuitable Investments - If you tell your broker that you are a “conservative” investor with a “low” risk tolerance and you are put into, for example, risky high technology stocks.

2- Unauthorized Trades -If you notice that buys and sells are occurring in your account without your prior permission or knowledge or any contact from your broker, these trades are “unauthorized”.

3- Risk Profile Change - If you notice that the “investment objective” or “risk profile” (”aggressive” “moderate” or “conservative”) on your monthly account statements has changed, without your input, from, for example, “moderate” to “aggressive”. A “red flag” should go up if you receive documents from your broker which do not reflect your investment objective (aggressive, moderate, conservative).

4- Fraudulent Stock Research - If you bought stocks relying on stock research which was determined by the SEC and New York Attorney General to be “fraudulent” (Infospace, ICGE, WorldCom, etc).

5- Churning - If your broker is excessively trading or constantly turning over your account, for the purpose of generating sales commissions.

6- Fraudulent Statement of Risk - If you have suffered substantial losses in your account and your broker told you that you had a “low risk” portfolio.

7- Over-concentration- If your account is over-concentrated in stocks and equity mutual funds which are primarily high technology or telecommunications, you have an over-concentrated portfolio. If your broker has not allocated your assets into different classes (stocks, bonds, cash) or diversified your stocks and equity mutual funds into different industry “sectors”.

8- Excessive Use of “Margin” - If your broker buys stock with “margin” borrowings which you did not authorize.

9- “Activity” Letters - If your brokerage firm sends you an “activity” letter advising you of large losses, turnover, high commissions, high margin levels, etc. in your account and this is not consistent with your instructions to the broker.

10- Mutual Fund “Switching” - If your broker advises you to get out of one mutual fund or “variable annuity” and into another. Often brokers are “pushing” mutual funds which are “proprietary” and which may give the broker higher compensation and are not necessarily in the client’s best interest.

Innovation Management: Corporate Man

December 26, 2008

Innovation Management

Establishing terminology and frames of reference helps set the context and build a solid foundation from which we can have an intelligent conversation about this topic.

Creativity and Innovation are very often confused. For example, one popular author recently defined innovation as “…any idea that generates wealth.” That’s lazy thinking.

A good definition of creativity is that it is problem identification and idea generation whereas innovation is idea selection, development and commercialisation.

Within idea generation, a further definition is valuable: the number of ideas produced, the novelty of the ideas produced, the diversity of ideas produced and the frequency of their production.

Corporate Man

In many lectures, the concept of the Corporate Man rears its head.

The myth of Corporate Man is based on suspect ideas such as a) businesses are not creative, b) managers are not creative / they are automatons, c) Corporate Man is functional and hence cannot be creative.

This idea that businesses are not creative is incorrect - they are highly creative entities where products and services must be developed, competitive advantage maintained and profit made etc. These are very creative activities, especially for senior players. In any one business, hundreds if not thousands of small to large problems need to be solved everyday - individuals are moved from an original state to a goal state, in other words, creativity is an implicit part of everyday activity.

Stereotypes often exist because there is truth to them on some level and this must be addressed.

The Corporate Man stereotype, if it applies at all, will do so most often to less senior individuals whose function is closer to maintenance on some level: maintaining the process, maintaining the infrastructure, maintaining order, fulfilling functional tasks and so forth. The concept stems from Taylorism and Fordism and the traditional manufacturing industry, where tasks are made short and simple to increase overall output. Further, the stereotype applies more to manufacturing than service or knowledge based industries.

Moving along this path we come up against the problem of instilling creative capacity / motivation to the “lower tasks.”

And that leads us to motivation theory, theory X and theory Y.

The Top 5 Tips For Buying A Home Theater System

If you have decided to join the rush to get into home theater you have a lot of homework to do to choose wisely, but the rewards will certainly be more than worth it. Just imagine enjoying movie theater quality sound and video right in your own home whenever you want. That’s what home theater systems offer folks these days, so here are the top 5 tips for buying a home theater system:

1. Above all else, do your homework. Read some of the reviews online and get a feel for what is out there and available within your price range. You can find plenty of product reviews on Amazon and at online electronics retailers that can help you get familiar with each manufacturer and what they offer. Don’t rush this part of the process as you need to be an educated consumer, and electronics equipment takes a little getting used to since they use terms and expressions that you just won’t find anywhere else.

2. Before you actually go shopping, sketch out your room and try to lay out where you want everything to fit. Where do you want the entertainment center including the TV to be situated? How does that affect the seating arrangement that you want? How about the speaker system, should they be wall or ceiling mounted, or free standing? How are you going to run the wires for the speakers so that they aren’t hanging out all over the place? Knowing the answers to these questions in advance can save a lot of backtracking later on.

3. Buying a home theater system should be preceded by arranging a demo for every system that you are considering. Even if you decide to buy online to get the best price, be sure to listen to the system first if you can. When you do, bring along a movie and/or CDs that you are very familiar with and represents entertainment that you like to enjoy, and use it as the demo. That will give you a more accurate feel for how well the home theater system will sound when you actually use it at home.

4. Determine how many speakers that you want to use for surround sound. These days the most common surround sound speaker setup is called 5.1 which means that you use 6 speakers including the subwoofer to create surround sound. But there are even newer formats that have been introduced called 6.1 and 7.1 and they allow you to use up to seven channels of speaker sound besides the subwoofer for low bass. This can be incredibly impressive, but also costs more and requires that you have the necessary equipment to power and decode these advanced formats.

5. Take your time and don’t rush through any part of the decision making process. This equipment is not cheap and it will be difficult to undo a wrong decision, especially if you have already run speaker wires and so forth. So don’t let anyone rush you or put you under pressure to buy. Shop around and find the system that stands out from the others.

If you follow the tips above it will help you learn all that you need to know to buy a home theater system that fits your budget and sounds great too.

Thad Pickering writes on many consumer related topics including audio and video. You can find out more about surround sound setup and surround sound installation by visiting our Home Theater website.

Babies and Christmas Shopping

December 24, 2008

Yesterday, I went to the mall with the baby to do some last minute Christmas shopping, and I needed to change the baby. Luckily there was a family lounge place. I love coming to this mall, because they have these nice places to change, and feed the baby. So I went in and started to do my thing. Changed the baby, then sat down to feed her in front of the TV that they have in there. I was chatting with some of the other moms that were in there doing the same thing. But then, out of nowhere, this lady came in and asked if I was going to stay in here. I said yaw. Then she said “no, seriously, are you staying in here, I want to feed my baby.” I laughed and ignored her, continuing my conversation. Then she goes really rude ” I need to feed the baby, you have to get out of here!” Well, there is only so much abuse that a dad can take. I said “look lady, this is the family lounge, and you can just sit here and feed the baby, just like rest of us. If you want some privacy…may be you should just go home.” She started crying and stormed out of the room. What was I supposed to do? Dads are people to, and we need to do the same things that the moms do.

Getting Into The Game - Playing in Texas Holdem Tournaments

December 23, 2008

Excited about getting into a game of Texas Holdem (No Limit) but don’t know what to do after the cards are drawn? Try these highly advanced techniques I’ve developed in my years of playing the game.

Early on, the game is all about getting stuck into some pots. The blinds are cheap at 10/20 so it is easy to see flops. Don’t hang around for the best Texas Holdem starting hands, as they will rarely visit you. Decisions as to whether to play should be based on table position and numbers of players in the pot.

If all the players are in and you can get in cheaply then do so even with rags. The hope is that you will hit two pair or higher in which case you should follow up with a large bet. Most people will be playing high cards - Ace, King, and a variety of picture cards. Hardly anyone will be playing lower cards like 56, suited or not.

Best Bet When Starting Out With No Limit Tournaments

High cards are of course best, but the way to advance in early no limit tournaments is to catch 2 pair or higher and make those holding a pair of Aces (inc one on the board) pay for it. Weaker players can never get away from big starting hands. If you have hit a two pair on the flop then you’ll likely see action against a single pair that often leads to an all-in.

You need to be mindful of the possibilities and play each poker hand as the situation and betting dictates, but you should know that your opponent does not expect you to be on a set or two pair if low cards are on the flop.

You may continue to see 75% of flops and always bet top pair. Look out for poker traps such as large re-raises, calling to the turn followed by aggressive betting. Watch the early position players betting heavily pre-flop. You should continue these poker strategies throughout the early game until the blinds move up above 50.

Remember, strategy accounts for probably 90% of your success. The rest is up to lady luck.

Adding ‘The Bluff’ To Texas Holdem Strategy

Texas Holdem is also a game of bluff - to play well you have to master bluffing and that often means stealing from late position. By the end of the first third of the game you should have a good handle on the way players play certain types of hand. Low cards on the board post-flop and turn, which combined with checking all around is an indication that you should dip your toe in the water.

Don’t bet large at these situations with a stone cold bluff because you will walk into players who have set a trap - you also look to other players with over cards like a thief looking to steal the pot. A pot size bet or slightly less is, I find, most effective. Obviously it will bring out the traps which you need to back away from. If not your bet will suggest to all the other players that you’re trying to disguise how good your hand really is.

These tricks are easy to use once you are aware of them and start using them when you are playing. Using these techniques can help even out the battlefield and enable you to stay on course to achieve your goal of winning big pots to progress in a Texas Holdem tournament.
