Central Michigan University was founded in 1892 as a teacher’s college, named Central Michigan Normal School and Business Institute. The school was renamed several times until it finally took the name of Central Michigan University in 1959, when it had 40 buildings erected on the campus — a significant expansion from what used to be a school that only held classes on the second floor of a building.
Well-known alumni of CMU include Peter Schoomaker, the 35th Chief of Staff of the United States Army; Lorrie Lynch, columnist and weekend editor of USA Today magazine; Lem Tucker, CBS News correspondent; Dick Enberg, CBS sports broadcaster; Phil Baroni, UFC professional fighter.
