HEALTH RISKS DUE TO LONG HOURS AT YOUR COMPUTER

April 30, 2008

Did you know that spending long hours at your computer can put
your health at serious risk? Most people does not even consider
that possibility, but t does, Working at a desk is extremely
hard on your body, and I would like to share this with you so
maybe you can avoid some of the most common health risks. The
most common of them all is back pain.

BACK PAIN: Its Types and Treatments

Are you fed up with taking all the treatments for your back pain
which you feel do not work? Are you a constant patient of
physical therapists, chiropractors? Is your back pain causing
you distress and trouble because you can not do the activities
you wish you could do? Have you been advised surgery to correct
your back’s structural abnormalities?

Back pain may be classified into two types: acute or short term,
and chronic. It the low back pain is short-term, it is most
probably due to lower back trauma. Certain disorders such as
arthritis may also cause acute back pain. Trauma such as sports
injury, vehicular injury, and injuries incurred around the house
may also result to back pain.

Back pain may range from simple muscle ache to stabbing pain
which results to limit in a person’s flexibility and range of
motion. The person suffering from back pain may also be unable
to stand straight. If the back pain persists for over three
months, the back pain is classified as chronic. It is usually
progressive and the cause is normally difficult to pinpoint.

Surgery is not usually the mode of treatment for back pain.
Over-the-counter pain relievers helps in the reduction of
discomfort along with the intake of anti-inflammatory
medications which helps reduce inflammation. Restoration of
function is the main goal of treatment as well as restoration of
the strength to the patient’s back. The treatment also aims to
stop recurrence of the back pain.

Back pain may be caused by various low back injuries. These
injuries include muscle strain, muscle spasm, ligament sprain,
problems with joint or slipped disk, and using your back muscles
in doing new activities such as lifting heavy furniture or
working on your garden. Slipped disk is caused by the nerves
bulging or pressing between the bones, which usually occurs when
lifting. Back pain is fairly common when caused by such
activities.

Some people opt for the application of cold and hot compresses
to relieve patients of back injury. These compresses are done
because they may help reduce inflammation and relieve the
patient of pain. Mobility is also significantly increased by
certain exercises, and strengthen the muscles of the back and
abdomen. These exercises can be found online, or may be
recommended by your doctors and chiropractors. In extreme cases,
surgery is recommended to help stop back pain and prevent
serious muscle injuries. But surgery is done usually as a last
resort, and if the cause of the back pain is anatomical. Some
physicians say that back pain can also be merely psychological
with some patients. It means that the patient perceives the back
pain only when there is no structural abnormality present in the
patient’s body.

Individuals suffering from back pain should seek the help of a
physician to evaluate the back pain if the pain persists for ore
than 72 hours. The physician will also prescribe the appropriate
medications to relieve the patient of the symptom, or may also
advise the patient to undergo surgical procedures if need be. He
may also recommend exercises that would be less straining to the
back, and will help maintain proper posture while lifting
objects. Heavy lifting, repetitive motion and improper posture
may also cause back pain. A person’s work might also predispose
an individual to developing back pain. Furniture and tools that
are designed to provide protection to the body against injury
and help maintain a healthy back are available for use at home
or at work.

It would be necessary to consult the help of a qualified
physician promptly when you feel the pain extends to your leg on
your knee area. Numbness of the leg, groin, rectal area, and
foot is also a cause of concern and should be told to a doctor
as well as development of nausea, vomiting, fever, and stomach
pain. Loss of bladder/bowel control occurring with back pain is
also warning problem that necessitates expert evaluation. Back
pain that occurs right after injury or trauma should also be
evaluated through physical examination as well as imaging and
other diagnostic procedures, more so when the patient suffers
from such intense pain that movement is severely hampered.

There are other risks as you sit in front of that computer but
it would be to much to write about in this article, so if you
would like to learn more about other risks such as:

Eye strain RSI (Repetitive Stress Syndrome) Carpal Tunnel
Syndrome Constant Head Aches Dizziness Breathing Problems
Difficulty Concentrating

Cell Phone Buying Guide to Help You Get the Best Value For The Money

Whether it’s your first or umpteenth mobile phone you are
planning to buy, knowing or being reminded of the following tips
will surely better your chances of getting the perfect one.

1. Features from which to choose:

You may either be enthralled by the looks of the latest cell
phone your friend is using or fall in love with one that you
found over the Internet. But the choosing doesn’t end with how
it looks. It is advisable to mentally dissect the cell phone
with regard to its features. The key is to select one that comes
with the options that will meet your needs. Here are some cell
phone features that you may or may not consider important:

- size and weight - design (clam shell, PDA, side ways, slide,
block) - screen colors and size - keypad - camera - FM radio,
mp3 player - messaging (MMS, SMS) - e-mail - to-do list - voice
commands - band support - E911 or enhanced 911 - connectivity
(bluetooth, GPRS, infrared, PC sync) - accessories (face plates,
head set, themes, screen savers, ring tones) - battery life -
dual mode

After narrowing down your choice of phones to about 2 to 3
models, research some more. Research what others have to say
regarding the phones you think you would like to use. Look for
reliable sources of phone reviews.

2. Be rebate alert.

This is for those who are in a tight budget. If you already are
enjoying the service of a certain carrier, see which phones are
offered fre’e with a rebate. If you have signed a contract, it
often entitles you to discounts and rebates for phones. Better
find out which ones they are.

For a better possible deal, instead of going to the carrier,
surf and see the websites of the manufacturer for more rebates.

3. Save more by shopping around.

Checking out if your choice phone is sold by third-party
retailers will help you get more value for your hard-earned
dollars. If you can find general electronics stores not
affiliated with carriers, buying phones from them is a lot
better, too. However, you have to ensure that your carrier will
support the phone. An unlocked phone that is also compatible
with other GSM carriers will prove to be a good buy, too.

Auction sites may also help you in this endeavor. However, you
have to be really careful if you choose to search for phones on
these sites.

4. Choose a service plan properly.

Comparison tables regarding US service plans abound in the
Internet. Over 60 plans from the largest nationwide service
providers are available for your perusal. If you do
cross-country traveling a lot, common sense will tell you to
sign up for a national phone plan. Better overestimate the
number of minutes you will use for every sent and received call.

5. There is a reason for the fine print.

You have to read the fine print. It is possible that you become
liable for an activation fee. The fine print will inform you of
that. Don’t forget to check the policy of your carrier for what
happens, in the event your phone is lost, stolen, or damaged.

There you have it. All you have to do is follow most, if not
all, of those bits of advice and you will see for yourself how
cell phone buying could be a cinch.

Decorating for The Cat Owner - How to Protect Your Possessions

April 29, 2008

The first thing a cat owner should know about home décor is to keep it simple. Cats are completely convinced that they are in charge, that the house and its possessions belong to them, and that they have every right to break rip or shred anything they like. Even a well trained cat (a possible oxymoron) will occasionally get overzealous, and with an inadvertent sweep of their tail will knock your favorite decoration from its place to a pile on the floor.

This disregard for your possessions, overt or otherwise, requires that you use some strategy when deciding on the placement of various decorative pieces. This is going to amount basically to common sense. Any surface that a cat can reach, they will walk on. Therefore low shelves or dressers should not contain any objects that are fragile. Items should be moved towards the middle of a surface, or back against the wall, to prevent them being knocked onto the floor. Items that have a broad or sturdy base should replace other more top heavy objects. Decorative accents that can shatter, such as ceramics or stone statues, may have to be replaced by steal or wood.

One way to display fragile items is to move them up. High shelves that are isolated from cat “stepping stones” will be out of dangers way. The same may be true of tall dressers, although unfortunately some cats will take a tall isolated dresser as a personal challenge, which they simply have to climb. Your décor will have to be matched to the personality of your cat.

Mirrors can also provide a problem, as some cats tend to attack their own reflection. If your cat has a problem with this, buying velvet or satin cloth and draping it over the mirror can be a decorative way to solve this.

Plants can be one of the biggest décor problems a cat owner will face. Your pet can chew on leaves, dig in the soil, or urinate in them. Luckily, there are ways both to decorate around these problems as well as to train your cat out of them. For biting and chewing of leaves, a natural spray repellent applied to the plant will cause most cats to avoid it. To stop a cat from rooting in or excreting in your plant you have to realize that the dirt in the pot is reminiscent of the cats litter box. In order to change this, use stones or gravel to fill over the top of the dirt. This will remove the cat’s fascination with the soil, and can be a lovely decorative accent to your plant

Cat grass is a special kind of plant you can grow in your home that is specifically formulated to be safe for felines, and to provide them with certain vitamins they may be lacking. Purchasing this can give your cat an acceptable alternative to messing with your plants. When you see your cat eating the cat grass, reward them lavishly. When you see them going near other plants, pick them up and place them in front of the cat grass. If they eat the offered vegetation, then reward them. In this way you can use positive reinforcement to turn one behavior into another

Cats will scratch anything which is made of cloth, including couches, drapes, and pillows. Because of this, you may want to start by spraying natural cat repellent on your more attractive pieces. A plastic couch cover may have to be used for a short time while the cat learns to behave itself. Buying your pet a scratching post and praising it for scratching that instead of your couch is a good way to positively reinforce the negative behavior out of the cat. You will have to carefully monitor their progress, and only remove protective coverings from your furniture when you are sure they are safe.

While cats are a hazard to most décor, planning ahead can minimize these problems. Cats are so difficult to train that it is often easier to simply decorate around them. Using common sense, and paying attention, should allow you to develop a setting that compliments your pet owning experience.

5 More Nutritional Tips to Burn Fat

April 28, 2008

This article will give you 5 more tips to turn your body into a lean muscle-building, fat-burning machine. In case you didn’t read the last 5 tips, the basic overview was to increase fiber intake, frequently drink water, eat a complex and healthy breakfast, increase calcium intake, and eat several small meals per day (as high as 8-10). Ready for more? Good! Keep reading…

#6: Eat carbs early in the day

Meals that contain larger amounts of carbohydrates should be eaten earlier in the day. This means that much of your whole grain and fruit consumption should occur before noon. The body’s metabolism is highest earlier in the day, so this is a great time to be supplying your muscles with energy in the form of glycogen (carbohydrates), while also ensuring that many of the carbohydrates you consume will be burned for fuel, rather than deposited as fat stores. Many families tend to have the biggest meal of the day in the evening, ironically at the time when the body is least in need of energy and the metabolism is lowest. The practical application would be to make breakfast bigger and dinner smaller. So try it out - prioritize eating carbohydrates early in the day, and focus on decreasing carbohydrate portion size as afternoon and evening approaches.

#7: Eat the right kind of carbs
While carbohydrates are important for providing energy and giving your body the ability to burn fat, you must choose the right carbs. Simple carbs like sugar and processed flour tend to be rapidly absorbed by the digestive system, which causes a release of the hormone that encourages fat deposit - insulin. Furthermore, the quick energy release that is followed by a rapid decrease in sugar levels will cause you to crave more food, which is why many people on a typical American diet are *always* hungry! So no matter what percentage of your diet is made up of carbohydrates, you must choose complex carbs that are slowly absorbed and digested, thus producing a long term source of energy that keeps you fuller for a longer period of time. Whole grain flours, vegetables, oats, and unprocessed grains, such as brown or wild rice are great choices, and also include many other compounds important in maintaining a high metabolism and proper digestive function.

#8 Eat fat
For the past several decades, mainstream Americans have been shifting to low or no fat diets, with the general result being an *increase* in obesity and chronic disease, and a decrease in health and fitness. In the meantime, world populations such as Eskimos, that consume as much as 70% of their diet from fat calories in whale blubber and fish, have one of the lowest rates of heart disease in the world. While this may seem ironic, there are some very good reasons. Typically, to replace calories that are not provided by dietary fat, carbohydrate consumption increases. Increased carb consumption leads to a faster burning energy source, which tends to contribute to cycling blood sugar levels, use of muscle tissue as fuel, low energy, and decreased metabolism and hormone production. In addition, many Americans will replace saturated fat, such as butter, with a trans fat, such as margarine. Trans fats are *much* worse for the body than saturated fat. So it is important to choose the right kinds of fat. Most animal fats, and many vegetable oils, are high in cholesterol, which contributes to heart disease. However, mono-unsaturated fats, such as those found in olive oil, nuts, fish oil, and various seed oils, can help lower cholesterol, reduce risk of heart disease, and enhance your body’s ability to burn fat as a fuel source. So try to eat fish several times a week (or supplement with fish oil), cook with olive oil, and try to eat at least a handful of a healthy nut (like almonds or walnuts) once per day.

#9 Avoid sugar substitutes

Artifical sweeteners, such as Aspartame, still taste sweet (that’s why they’re sugar replacements!). When the taste receptors on your tongue taste this sweet substance, your digestive systems begins to produce compounds that prepare your body to use the “food” that your brain thinks you are consuming. The hormones produced in the digestive process are still present once this fake food enters your small intestine, but no actually energy release or satiety occurs, which leaves you with a gut full of digestive hormones that need food to break down and make the brain crave even more food, this time the real stuff. This is why studies have shown that consumption of diet soda products are associated with obesity! If you’re really serious about burnign fat, ditch any sugar substitute foods or diet drinks that you currently consume. I guarantee that once you overcome the initial addiction withdrawal, you’ll feel a hundred times better.

#10 Eat like a car

Your body runs on fuel. If you put too much fuel into the gas tank, an overflow occurs, and in the body’s case, this means fat deposition. I realize that the idea of limiting calories is very simple, but sometimes the approach is wrong. Never give yourself a certain “number” of calories per day. You’d never take your car to the gas station and fill up if you didn’t plan on driving it, and the same goes for your body. If you have a light day of activity (”low mileage”) or a sedentary day (sitting in the garage), you should sometimes not even be consuming 50% of the calories you’d normally consume, because your body doesn’t need them. For instance, on a typical day, I consume 5000-6000 calories (based on my metabolism and amount of activity), but on a weekend of travel, where I am either sitting in a car or airplane, I often consume as little as 1000 calories per day! If your body doesn’t need the fuel, there’s not a necessity to put it in your mouth. On the other hand, there will be some days where I consume up to 8000 calories, simply because that is how many I actually burn through with my activities! So if you’re on a set diet of, say, 2000 calories per day, don’t be afraid to vary as needed.

I’d like to finish by encouraging you to keep at it. Switching to a healthy diet can be unbearable at times, but the longer you stick with it, the easier it gets. It’s just like exercise - you can bring yourself to a maintenance phase where moderate to high physical activity becomes easier, but the initial work is pretty difficult. Key Largo - Frater Albertus

Key Largo:

The fans turn lazily in front of the door

They open wide showing mangroves galore

An egret in the everglades stalks its prey

Haltingly it walks along its way

On another bright and sunny day

A woman’s floppy hat shades her beauty not so brittle

The silken scarf that holds the hat flutters just a little

She pauses in the threshold of the door

Surveying what she’s looking for

She is looking straight at me

Her beauty flaunted all to see.

‘Where are you from?’ while noticing I had a frown

On the other couch she elegantly sits down

In the small hotel lobby bar

‘A city north and very far.’

My heart begins a frantic beat

Her flush was not just from the heat.

‘Let me guess… Toronto, it is pretty’

‘A New Yorker?.. It is gritty.’

The open lobby with chaises rattan

Encompassed us as the hours ran

Mimosas came and munchies went

Philosophizing led us to invent

All manner of reasons the head to spin

While we shared a special grin.

A friend of depth and through much time

When years after the greatest crime

I returned to the lobby of that Inn

Recalling how she cooed

Remembering that special mood

We never got to raise a brood

The waitress noticed as I cried

I mumbled ‘She should not have died’.

FRATER ALBERTUS MAGNUS:

He huddles over the little bowl I’ve been told

He expects my arrival so I am bold

I wait in a room on the ground floor

And wonder what’s behind the massive door

I inspect its’ symbols, carved complete

I recognize Bathomet down near my feet

Ptah’s T-square and gargoyles replete

A ’spagyric’ toque, a familiar eye

On top the Pyramid reaching for the sky,

And You might wonder why, am I

Here in Salt Lake City to see Frater Albertus Magnus

The leader of a worldwide group some call the ‘Magus’.

He comes to greet me from downstairs

Cobwebs dangle from his hairs

His look and manner are quite welcoming

I feel almost like it’s my homecoming

‘Hello my son, you come, well recommended’

Before that night was therein ended

I learned the truth about ‘the Stone’

Now with means and methods known

He told me of his looking into man’s future

And we talked of ways that WE must nurture

The iron ‘hot’ to strike it, NOW!

I told him soon I’d make the’ Vow’!

However, another pact I’d make

Which led my knees to ever quake

There is truth of many things

Do not worry about ‘toe rings’

The twitching touches nerves complete
Can sense the earth beneath your feet

And lead you past your ‘vision quest’
Make you at home on Gaia’s breast

‘I wish you well along your WAY!’

The door he closed, I heard him say!

No, call for elixir of youth for me

No gold from lead are NEED for me
I wait with all, the World to see

My ‘vow’ to join soul quite FREE

And all in all, LOVE with the ‘World Mind’

For me - you might think is seldom kind!

How to Make a Gift Basket

April 27, 2008

Gift Baskets are an ideal gift for nearly any occasion. Gift
baskets provide a convenient way to find a gift for practically
any occasion, but they also provide an avenue for creative and
personalized gift giving. Making gift baskets is fun and easy,
and homemade gift baskets generally prove to be superior,
personalized gifts to their pre packaged counterparts.

Finding a perfect gift is usually a challenge that goes far
beyond understanding someone’s interests and hobbies. One of the
biggest problems with gift giving is the lack of true “tweener”
products that cost in the reasonable $30-$60 range. For every
hobby there are lots of little items that are needed on a
continuing basis, and there are lots of bigger items that are
expensive and/or very personalized equipment choices. Small
items like golf balls and tees are not sizeable enough to
represent a real gift, but a set of golf shoes or clubs is too
expensive and individual to make a good gift. Gift baskets make
it easy to find an assortment of smaller products and put them
together for a personalized gift basket.

As a starting point, you should try to think of a quality,
themed container to build the gift basket around. For example, a
bucket makes a perfect container for a car wash gift basket.
Absent a container that matches the theme, you will be forced to
buy, find or make some other kind of container. Wicker baskets
are popular, but really any container will do if it is dressed
up properly.

Generally, gift baskets are put together with shredded paper.
You can buy this paper at stores where crafts are sold, and cut
it with scissors. This paper can also be used to cover the
container if you are forced to use something like a shoe box.
You could use newspaper, depending on the type of gift basket
you are making, but colored paper is something you should plan
on getting.

A great way to wrap the gift basket up is with tulle netting.
This can be purchased at hobby stores or through many Internet
locations cheaply. Place the gift basket in the center of a
large piece of tulle netting, wrap all the content inside the
netting, and tie it off with a ribbon.

If presentation is your top priority, some of the commercially
available gift baskets will be hard to beat. But with work, a
homemade gift basket can look even better than purchased gift
baskets. But the real value in personalizing a gift basket is
the thought that goes into the individual items of the gift.
That’s the thought that is remembered, and endearing to the
person you are giving to.

Tips for Promoting your Home Business Idea or Opportunity

By Jimmie Sypolt

From the beginning of commerce, businesses have been promoting the ideas and products of other businesses as a way to make their own business a successful one. For example, you may see that a real-estate company may promote a particular lawyer in order to close a sale while that lawyer will also promote that real estate company in his firm.

Everyone has heard of the barter system and may have thought that this system is outdated and is not used anymore. However, with modern technology, the barter system is still alive. People still trade services and items rather than using money. The business of Internet marketing is proof that the barter system is still alive.

In the Internet Marketing world, we call this new form of the barter system, cross promoting. This system is in place to trade of advertising space. Advertising companies in the past have charged top dollar for premium advertising space on the most prominent bill boards or a radio station that has millions of listeners.

Now, with the availability of the Internet, instead of paying for advertising space in this way, you would place the ad for your own home based business idea or opportunity on another website while the other website places their ad on your website. Cross promoting can be done in many ways and can be a very cost effective way for you to advertise your Internet business.

Reciprocal linking is one major way that webmasters help each other to advertise their products, services and opportunities. Exchanging links with other similar websites as your own, is a very effective, but you should also be aware of who your direct competition is and avoid promoting products and services that are exactly the same as yours.

One of the best things about exchanging links, or ads, with other similar websites is that each website benefits from becoming more popular in the eyes of the search engines. Search engines look at the number of links into a website from other websites throughout the Internet and determine the importance of each website based on these factors. For example, if you are able to exchange links with another website that has a higher search engine ranking than your own, you will benefit greatly from the popularity of that website.

Therefore, reciprocal linking to a more popular site, can not only help increase your advertising ability and website traffic, but will also increase the popularity of your own website by being rated higher in search engine rankings.

Reciprocal linking leads into more opportunities to promote more of your ideas to your customers, or even potential customers, when they subscribe to your ezine, or newsletter. When you get a subscription to your publication, you can now use this as an opportunity to use cross promote your other ideas and opportunities.

This article is freely distributable as long as this Resource Box is kept in tact.

New Instance Of American Ingenuity; Nation Learns To Type

April 25, 2008

Who would have thought, just ten or so years ago, that people in all walks of life would have to learn how to type, somehow?

Now, who doesn’t? We see the nervous airline reservation agent, searching the keypad for the next peck, the thick-fingered plumber tapping out his invoices, the uncertain exec coming to terms with the need to enter a notation - all manner of people who never imagined, way back when, that they should have taken a typing course.

Talk about American ingenuity. We have, by one resort or another, become a nation of bad typists, but typists nevertheless.

Some employ one finger from each hand, others two or three poised above the pads, or all ten fingers in an order never dreamed of in a high-school typing class.

And yet somehow we sit down at our computers and, one way or another, we get whatever job done that we must.

Now, there’s American ingenuity about as widespread and vibrant as it’s ever been.

Tom Attea, humorist and creator of NewsLaugh.com, has had six shows produced Off-Broadway and has written comedy for TV. Critics have called his writing “”delightfully funny” and “witty” with “good, genuine laughs.”

Laptop Computers Are Increasing In Popularity With Gamers

The last year has seen masses of hype thrown towards Microsoft’s Xbox 360, Sony’s Playstaion 3 and Nintendo’s Wii but a lot of interest has been seen in PC games. Basically whatever happens the PC will always be a major games platform.

Despite the efforts of some, gaming desktops are usually labelled big, ugly, loud, downright expensive and they are usually put in the corner of the bedroom. Enter the Laptop Computer…

Laptop computers are now accountable for up to 50 percent of all Computers sold which has been propelled by the consumer market.

Although most users don’t require mobility there’s something about being able to move a notebook computer from place to place and being wire free that we all find a must. The only gripe for game lovers was that the majority laptops were not powerful enough for playing games.
Any notebook meant for playing games on was also big, ugly, loud and just downright expensive.

Things have changed, changed a lot in fact. First the Core Duo processors started matching the pace of Desktop processors. Intel have done brilliantly marketing centrino and being the market frontrunner but AMD has applied the necessary pressure on them with their Turion X2 line. Nvidia has also pushed the limit on performance with their range of performance graphic processors. Things are moving in the right direction. Intel release the quad core processor in 2008. Nvidia will release the Geforce 9 series after having success with the 8 series.

Here are some good Gaming Laptops.
